Hutchinson KS

We took a little mini vacation over Labor Day Weekend.  We pulled the camper down to Hutchinson KS and did a bit of exploring.  We had a great time.  I highly recommend the KS Cosmosphere and Space Center.  It has authentic pieces and not just replicas.  I was really surprised to see the Odyssey from Apollo 13 right here in KS.  It was a fun little trip.

Yesterday we had a little football party with our friends in the neighborhood.  They are a house divided--he is a Washington fan and she is smarter and a Nebraska fan :)  The kids and I went down and showed him was Husker Power is :)  She had her kids in on the act as well--they were yelling Go Big Red at Daddy all afternoon.  It was great fun and I must say he was in good spirits all day--even though we kicked their tails.

First Day of School

Today is the kids' first day of school.  I'm having a very hard time believing I am the mother of a 7th grader, 4th grader, and 2nd grader....where does the time go???

Dillan and I are going to have a special day.  I'm taking him to get a hair cut and to lunch and I think maybe ice cream is in order.  He is feeling a bit left out since he doesn't start pre-K for another month.  I think I will enjoy the special time with just him :)

British Soccer Camp

The kids went to soccer camp for their last week of summer vacation.  It was super hot, but they all had a great time!!  These coaches travel around the USA doing soccer camps for the kids and they are amazing!!!  All 4 of the kids loved it and learned a lot and the coaches were upbeat, positive, and fun the entire time!!  It was a wonderful experience and I hope they get to repeat it next summer.

Pictures

Seems like the only time I post anymore is when I realize I have a bunch of pictures to download--I really need to get better about this.  I actually enjoy blogging--just need to get back into the habit of doing it.

Here are some pictures of the girls bridging for Scouts.  Meghan bridged from Daisies to Brownies and Katie flew up from Brownies to Juniors.  Sorry for the picture quality--I'm going to blame it on Shane this time :)  He took the pictures and had the camera on the wrong setting :)

Next up---Field day!!!  I have many more pictures of Meghan than Katie this time.  Hers was in the morning while we everything was still "right with the world".  Katie's, however, was in the afternoon--so instead of taking pictures I was dealing with my sunburn, Katie's sunburn--finding sunscreeen, Katie's overheating--getting her water, and Dillan's bathroom issues!  It was a crazy afternoon, but overall a very fun day for the kids!!!

Jake and Mindy brought their kids down and we went to Atchison, KS to climb on the trains.  Little did we know the highlight would be getting to ride a really cool one....

More pictures

Dillan took a field trip to Home Depot with his preschool class. They rode the bus, did a scavenger hunt in the garden center, bought some flowers, and returned to school.  It was a fun day for all the kids.

Spring Break

We have had Spring Break this week. Since that means all six of us are home, we have been having a good time.

The first day we all ran a race--It was the Westport St. Patrick's Day Run. It was really fun. It was Dillan's first race and he loved it. Here are some pictures.

We also went up to Omaha to go to the zoo. It was a really fun day.

someday I will keep this thing up

ok let's see...
we are in a lull from sports right now. we will be starting soccer up again in a couple of weeks. For now the kids are doing music lessons and scouts. Brendan started guitar and he loves it. Kathryn is doing piano and she practices continuously. And Meghan is doing vocals again... singing 24/7. They are all doing quite well.

We have been battling sickness with Dillan though--he has had a rash that would not go away no matter what we did for months. He has been to the doctor repeatedly and nothing has gotten better. Well, we finally did see another doctor and she took the time to do a culture. It turns out his has been fighting strep which turned into a staph infection. So for about a week he has been on 5 medications (he had one for pink eye which was a separate issue) Now we are finally down to 3. One antibiotic and two ointments. I can see improvements finally so hopefully we will be over this soon.

On Saturday we all completed a race. It was a 4 miler for Brendan, Shane and I. Brendan smashed his previous times--His splits were 9,9,9, and 7--amazing!!! Shane ran with Brendan and I ran on my own. I won't even mention my time--it was horrible. I have reached a turning point--I don't just want to finish anymore I want a good time now. So I guess I know what work I need to do. The other 3 kids ran sprints. It was the first time Dillan had raced and he loved it!!!! Meghan is quick as quick can be so she had fun. Katie did well, but she decided that she doesn't like to sprint. She would rather run long distances--now we know.

I'm still doing crossfit--actually I'm totally addicted to it. There is no doubt about that!!! I can't shut up about it. I love it!!! I started another blog to keep kind of a journal of my progress. Maybe I will shut up a bit to the people who don't want to talk crossfit 24/7 :) Anyway, if you care to check it out the address is
http://www.laurie-addictedtocrossfit.blogspot.com/

It probably won't be exciting to read--as I said it's more of a log for me. But, check it out if you want.

Updates

I went in to the eye doctor yesterday and I can say the PRK was a success. I am now 20/20 in my right eye and 20/25 in my left. I am really happy with that. I have very little dryness and no other issues. It was worth all I went through!!

The family is still incredibly busy with all the activities going on in our lives. I'm taking care of our home--making a lot of changes now that I know we are staying another 2 years--finishing up my classes (done at the end of March), and shuffling kids all the time.

Dillan is still loving preschool 3 days a week. We are trying to get him into soccer this spring, but the post here says they have to be 5 or else they are on a one on one with the parent--drills only--no games type of practice. He tried that in the fall and quit on his own because it wasn't fun for him--we can do that at home. So, I'm going in to talk with the youth sports director and see what we can do.

Meghan is still in Daisies although she is prepping now to cross over to Brownies in April--so exciting!! She has also started vocal lessons again--YAY!!!!!! We are really excited to have her back in that. When the instructor heard her he said he didn't expect that to come out of a 7 year old--I have to agree. She will also be playing soccer this spring--busy busy.

Katie is in Brownies and she is really growing up as she is prepping to fly up to Juniors in April--I can't believe that!!! She has started taking piano and is loving it. She practices everyday--without any kind of reminder. I love this girl! She too will be playing soccer.

Brendan is the busiest of them all--comes with age I guess. He is still absolutely a boy scout through and through! He will be attending a merit badge college this weekend and complete a climbing badge next weekend. Earn his Tenderfoot the weekend after that and we are just signing up for summer camp as well.--whew! I'm glad I"m not doing all that :) He is also finishing up his wrestling season. He is really liking the sport and has learned a tremendous amount. The team he is on is complete novice--which was great for this year, but we will have to switch it up next year. He will also be playing soccer soon--his coach from last year moved the entire team up this year so they can stay together so he will play 14 & under instead of 12 & under and Shane will be his assistant coach again--we are all happy about that. And as if that wasn't enough--I just now got a phone call that they have a spot downtown for him to take guitar lessons--so that too will start next week.

The whole family is going to run a St. Pat's race. The 3 little ones will run a kids' race. The distance is based on age--not sure what it will be yet. This will be Dillan's first race :) Shane, Brendan, and I will be running the 4 miler. We are getting ready to plan costumes--should be a ton of fun!!!

And finally--I think we are going to run another 1/2 marathon in May. It's the first one here in Leavenworth--so we will probably give it a go.

That's the update--I better run--this house isn't going to clean itself--as much as I would like it to :)

Wrestling

Brendan competed in his first wrestling tournament. He had a good time and now knows exactly what its all about. He wrestled 4 times, won 1--score 7-2, lost one by points (didn't remember the score), and got pinned twice. Like I said though, he now knows what it's all about and he is ready to hit his practices hard and improve for the next one. We will see how the rest of the season goes.

Blessings of Having My Husband Home!

I have really been enjoying having our family all together this year. After having Shane deployed it is such a nice change and I try to remember what a blessing it is. Today is one example of that blessing. While Shane was gone, when one of the kids had an activity, all the other children had to come along or I had to miss it. This sometimes was a huge deal--smaller children don't always sit well at older children's activities. And I would feel guilty at not being there for the activity if I chose to opt out of it. Today is Brendan's first wrestling tounament. He is really excited about it, but it is also 1 1/2 hours away. And for those of you who don't know, wrestling is all about waiting--first you show up and weigh in--then there is nothing to do but wait until your first match. Then you sit and wait more for your next match. And depending on how you are doing this can go on all day. Some boring times for the wrestler, but even more so for siblings who have to wait. So enters my blessing....Shane. He took Brendan to his tournament and I kept the other kids at home. Brendan gets to have a parent there supporting him and the other kids aren't bored out of their minds. The only downside--I dont' get to see him wrestle this time :( But, knowing there will be closer tournaments other weeks makes it easier. Good luck Brendan!!! I love you and I know you will do great!!!

Dillan's 4th Birthday!!

I cannot believe my "baby" is going to be four on Tuesday!! He is turning into such a "big" little guy. We had his first party with friends this year and he was just eccstatic!! He chose dragons as his theme, which kind of surprised me, but he was adamant that it be dragons. And not knights--just dragons. So, Mommy had to be a bit creative as there isn't much party stuff that is dragons with no knights. All in all it was a fun day and he was really happy.

Enjoy the photos!

Weekend of Girl Stuff

This weekend was a weekend for the girls. On Friday, the Girl Scouts had an overnight at the Great Wolf Lodge. Katie went with her troop on her own, but because Meghan is a Daisy, I spent the night with her. We had a good time. We spent a couple of hours in the water park--Meghan loved swimming and splashing with her friends. Then they had a dance in the lobby--100s of girls were there and it was craziness, but it was fun. Then we had pizza and hit the sack--got up in the AM and headed for home because we had to prep for Meg's birthday party.

As I said we rushed home to prep for our little girl's birthday party. Her theme was Fancy Nancy so we were super fancy for this party. It was a fun time for all!
